D E V O T I O N S By Agatha Lubbers, Administrator

An important aspect of the life of the Christian School teacher and a staff of Christian School teachers is a time of weekly devotions that is as devoid as possible of any interruption.

Our practice at Eastside for the past several years is to have devotions every Wednesday morning immediately after the snack sale and during the mid-morning break for the students. This seems to be the best time for all of us. This is a time that we also combine our devotions with a short meeting of the faculty so that we can all catch up with each other on the details of group activities. Our weekly note from the administrator does most of this but we need the interaction as well.

Although our teachers have several times of devotions with their students during each day, it is essential and important for our teachers to have an opportunity to have group devotions that are devoted especially to the needs of the teachers themselves. Devotions have a way of addressing the unique problems and concerns of the teachers in their calling to instruct the young people and children that come daily into their classrooms. Meditation on God’s word is so important for teachers so they can be revitalized in their calling for each moment and task of the day.

We have made it a practice that each teacher takes his/her turn in leading these devotions. Our devotions should be at a time when the teachers are not disturbed by the problems that tend to arise when no one is available to supervise the children because all the teachers and adults are devoting themselves to the meditations, songs, and prayers which are an integral part of the devotional activity.

I should like to propose that there are parents or others who would be willing to make themselves available on Wednesday mornings 10:00 to 10:30 so that all the teachers can participate in our devotional activities. Currently it is necessary that at least one teacher is absent from devotions because once every sixth time a teacher must be one of the playground or gym supervisors. We are thinking that a teacher would not have to miss the devotional activities each week if parents or others would indicate that they are willing to be scheduled as gymnasium and playground supervisors during the devotional period of the teachers.

There is an added advantage to this. Volunteering to supervise and work with the children will make it possible for you to get to know them and for them to get to interact with and know others than the teachers.

Give this some thought and careful consideration. God can use you in this way, I believe.

If anyone would be willing to participate in this way, please call Agatha Lubbers and ask to have your name placed on the list of those who have volunteered to help.
